The god of good beginnings is truly lord Ganesha. Whatever you may praise him as – Vinayaga, Vigneshwara, Ganpati and so on, no event no auspicious beginning is complete without him. In every sense he is the god of success. It is interesting to note that, one of his names Vigneshwara literally translates to remover of obstacles.
The story of how Ganesha came in to being is quite an interesting one. Once lord Parvati put Nandi on watch and told him not to let anyone in while she took bath. But when lord Shiva arrived on the scene and asked to be let in Nandi could do nothing as he is very loyal to Shiva and can never go against his will. Parvati was quite infuriated by Nandi’s action and she wanted someone who was loyal to her. Hence she took the turmeric that she had for her bath and sculpted a Ganesha out of it and breathed life in to it. The next time Shiva comes to see Parvati, Ganesha blocks the way and refuses to let him in. despite requests from several boothaganas and Nandi. Shiva is angered by his actions and slays his head. Parvati is in unbearable sorrow and anger on losing her beloved Ganesha and vows to destroy the entire creation. Shiva tries to pacify her by sending Brahma and get a head for Ganesha. The first creature that was lying facing north was to be bought as a head for Ganesha. That is why Ganesha still remains with an elephant head in all depictions. There is also another story of how Ganesha lost his head is that lord parvati was asked by shiva to observe the punyaka vrata for a year to appease Vishnu and as a result she was blessed with a beautiful little boy and all the gods called on them to commemorate the arrivalof lord ganesha. Lord Sanishwara, the son of surya refused to look at the child because it would bring the child bad luck but parvati insisted and when sani’s eyes fell on ganesha, his head came off. Vishnu immediately hurried to the bank of river Pushpabhadra and brought back the head of a young elephant.
There is also another common icon associated with Ganesha. According to one purana, Ganesha simply wrapped the serpent king Vasuki around his neck. Ganesha is also portrayed as using that snake as the sacred thread. The most famous one is that he wrapped Vasuki as a belt around his stomach. There are innumerous tales and mysteries that surround Ganesha that make him one of the most beloved gods in Hinduism.
Right from medieval times. Ganesha was much worshiped by traders and merchants who had to frequently travel abroad. When they settled abroad they took along with them their beloved ganesha. This influence can be seen in Buddhist culture which also worships some form a deity similar to ganesha. What makes him so endearing maybe his different form or the mythical stories that surround him but the belief remains unshaken. Ganesha is also commonly associated with lakshmi and and can be seen together on many amulets and pictures. Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and Ganesha the god of wisdom and knowledge.
Ganesha is often considered as the common meeting ground for all hindus. Despite the numerous sects, all of them worship Ganesha. Ganesha is everywhere on the top of new notebooks, invitation cards and in invocation songs. Hence Ganesha is also fondly referred to as the god of opening doors. When one enters any temple, the first deity they worship would invariably be Ganpati. Because it is customary to offer prayers to Ganesha first. He is the first and foremost god. He is the leader of all ganas (beings) that is why he is known as Ganpati. After all what everyone wants is risk free ventures that are successful and that is exactly what lord Ganesha guarantees.
Failure is never fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts. This is the faith that Ganesha instills in all his devotees. Despite the many obstacles, people pray to Ganesha to help them overcome difficulties and attain success. There is no cheat sheet to success and Ganesha isn’t definitely offering one. But the strength to endure obstacles is what Ganesha gives us.
