The Jagannath Ratha Yatra, or Chariot Festival, is one of the most significant and grand festivals celebrated in honor of Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Krishna. The festival involves several important rituals and holds deep spiritual significance:
1. Snana Yatra: This is the ceremonial bathing of the deities, which marks the beginning of the Ratha Yatra festivities. The deities of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are bathed with 108 pots of sacred water, leading to their temporary ‘illness’ known as Anasara.
2. Anasara Period: After the Snana Yatra, the deities are kept in seclusion for about two weeks, believed to be recuperating from their ‘illness’. During this time, devotees are not allowed to see the deities.
3. Netrotsava: This marks the reappearance of the deities to the public after the Anasara period. The devotees eagerly await this moment to have a darshan (holy sight) of the rejuvenated deities.
4. Ratha Yatra: The main event where the deities are placed on beautifully decorated chariots and pulled by thousands of devotees through the streets to the Gundicha Temple, about 3 kilometers away. This symbolizes the journey of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra to their aunt’s temple.
5. Bahuda Yatra: After a stay of seven days, the deities return to the main temple in a similar procession, completing the journey.
6. Pahandi: The ritual procession in which the deities are brought out of the temple and placed onto the chariots. Devotees sing, dance, and play musical instruments in celebration.
7. Chhera Pahara: The ritual of sweeping the chariots with a golden broom by the king of Puri, symbolizing that even the greatest king is the humble servant of the Lord.
The significance of the Ratha Yatra lies in its representation of the Lord’s journey to give darshan to all, especially those who cannot visit the main temple. It symbolizes unity, equality, and devotion, bringing together people from all walks of life to participate in the joyous occasion.
