Vaishno Devi temple is a holy pilgrimage destination for the Hindus, located in the folds of three-peaked mountain Trikuta, 12 km away from Katra in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It’s the temple dedicated to Shakti, which attract thousands of tourists, especially but not limited to the Hindu pilgrims from every corner of the country. Mata Vaishno Devi, also popularly known as Mata Vaishnavi and Mata Rani in Hinduism, is believed to have spent some time in this cave at an altitude of 5,200 ft while observing various spiritual disciplines.

It is very difficult, like any other old shrines, to trace back the history of Vaishno Devi; however geological studies indicate that the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi is almost a million years old. Though the Vedic literature doesn’t refer to any goddess, however one can find the mention of Trikuta hills in Rigveda – the oldest of the four Vedas. The tour provides sufficient time to seek the divine at Darbar.

Mata Vaishno Devi yatra is regarded as one of the holiest of the hindu pilgrimages, it is a yatra to the shrine of vaishnavi or goddess durga an incarnation of shakthi located deep in the heart of the Trikuta Mountains in the controversial state of jammu and Kashmir. It is one of the 108 shakthi peethas. More than 10 million pilgrims visit this shrine every year.  The journey is popularly known as Moonh Maangi Muradein Poori Karne Wali Mata, which means, the Mother who fulfills whatever her children wish for.

The first mention of the Mother Goddess is in the epic Mahabharat. When the armies of Pandavs and Kaurvas were arrayed in the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Arjun, the chief warrior of Pandavs upon advice of Sri Krishna; meditated upon the Mother Goddess and sought her blessings for victory. This is when Arjun addresses the Mother Goddess as ‘Jambookatak Chityaishu Nityam Sannihitalaye’, which means ‘you who always dwell in the temple on the slope of the mountain in Jamboo’ (probably referring to the present day Jammu).

Vaishno Devi shrine basically comprises idols of three deities in the form of black stones, namely, Mahakali, Mahasaraswati and Mahalakshmi
