Vethalan Kavu Mahadeva temple is positioned in Krishnapuram, near Kayamkulam, Alappuzha district in the state of Kerala, India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The lord is otherwise called as Mahadeva. This sacred Hindu worship place is considered among the rarest worship places on the earth. The main deity of the temple Lord Shiva or Mahadeva is worshiped here as Vethala. The temple is only 3 km distance from renowned Oachira Parabrahma Mandir or temple. During the festival of Mahashivratri, a festival dedicated to Lord Shiva or Mahadeva, visitors or pilgrims from all over the neighboring towns or cities gather here to have Darshan and blessings of God.
Vethalan Kavu Mahadeva temple was constructed during the 14th century by a local ruler. According to a popular history, a sage called Balamukhi visited the area and revered Lord Shiva with high devotion. As per the Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is known for granting incredible boons. Finally, pleased by his sincerity, Lord Shiva appeared and granted him the boon of ultimate salvation.There is another popular legend regarding the origin of this sacred temple. It is said that a local ruler called Veerbhadra Swamy who was also an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva suffered from some mysterious physical problems. His spiritual advisors suggested him to build a Shiva temple. According to the advice, the King constructed the Mahadeva temple. To his astonishment, he was cured completely.
The architecture of this sacred temple is a fine example of blend style of the Dravidian architecture and the Kerala architecture. The temple has one basement. However, it is said that no one can reach down to the mysterious basement as it is guarded by snakes. Local inhabitants claim that basement in the temple has an incredible treasure. Only the main priest of the temple is able to access to the basement of the temple. The exterior portion of the temple resembles the older style of architecture, a commonly followed style of the South India. The central area of the temple comprises the sacred idols of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvathi. The idol of Nandi can also be seen in the same area.

The temple is open for devotees from 9 AM to 12.30 PM and from 5 PM to 8 PM.
The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, also called as Mahadeva. Mahashivarathri is the major festival celebrated in the temple. Other festivals celebrated in this temple include Pradosha and Vishu.
