The name Poovattoor is originated from Poo Attoor which literally means the land where flower falls. The legend says that the goddess of Poovattoor and goddess of Pattazhi were sisters. The elder sister offered her a handful of flowers, and told her to reside at the place where the flower is falling. The flowers fell on Poovattoor.
The temple is open for devotees from 5 AM to 11.30 PM and from 5 PM to 7.30 PM.
The annual festival celebrated in the temple is considered to be one of the biggest temple festivals in Kulakkada Panchayat. This festival is famous for its rituals. The rituals include Aalp Ezhunnallathu Kambam, Kettukazcha and Ponnin Thirumudi.
