Pisharikavu Temple, Koyilandy
Pisharikavu temple is positioned in Koyilandy, Kozhikode district in the state of Kerala, India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. The temple is maintained by the Malabar Devasvom Board.
The legend says that before the remaining members of the Ettuveettil family after the conspiracy against Marthanda Varma settled down in Kollam. They were rich diamond merchants. One of family members did severe meditations with sincere devotion to please the goddess Bhadrakaali. One night the goddess Sri Porkali (the family goddess of Ettuveettil pilla family) appeared in his dream and gave him a very special sword named “Nandhakam” and told him to pray her in the form of this sword also advising him to return to his home town. Astonished by the dream, he raised a temple in his home town and revered the Nandakkam sword. The family, by the grace of mother Bhadrakaali, turned out to be very rich and powerful. The community is said to be in existence till and it is also said that some special rights are given to them for conducting festival called “Kaliyattam”.
The temple is open for devotees from 5.30 AM to 12 PM and from 5.30 PM to 8 PM.
The important festival of the temple is Kaaliyaatta Mahothsavam held for eight days in Malayalam month of Meenam. The festival date is announced after the athazha poja infront of the deity and takes out the naandakam sword and kept away from the Temple. It will return only when the Festival commences. Another important festival celebrated in the temple is Navaratri.
Important poojas performed in the temple are Ucha pooja at 12 pm Athazha pooja at 8.00 pm. Here, Ucha Pooja is also considered as the saktheya type pooja.
