Jeenmata Temple, Jeen Dham

Jeenmata is a village of religious importance in Sikar district of Rajasthan, India. It is located at a distance of 29 km from Sikar town in south. Jeenmata Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Jeenmata, the Goddess of Power. The sacred shrine of Jeenmata is believed to be a thousand years old.

Jeenmata temple is situated near the hill 10 km from village Rewasa. It is surrounded by thick forest. It was originally known as Jayantimala. The year of its construction is not known however the sabhamandapa and pillars are definitely very old.

Mugal Emperor Aurangzeb wanted to completely destroy the Jeenmata temple. Being invoked by her priests, the Mata let out her army of bhairons (a species of fly family) which brought the Emperor and his soldiers to their knees. He sought pardon and the Kind hearted Mataji excused him from her anger. Aurangzeb donated akhand (Ever-glow) oil lamp from his Delhi palace. This lamp is still glowing in the sacred sanctorum of the Mata.

There is a belief that in a village Ghoghu of Churu, king Ghangh loved and married an apsara on the condition that he would not visit her palace without prior information. King got a son called Harsha and a daughter Jeen. The two children practiced extreme asceticism and with time Jeen gained status of Durga as her avatar and Harsha as incarnation of Bhairon. Jeen Mata is also known as Mahishasura Mardini Durga with eight arms.

The year of construction of the Jeenmata temple is not known. It is believed that Pandavas during their exile from Hastinapur reconstructed the temple in the present style. The Jeenmata temple was a place of pilgrimage from early times and was repaired and rebuilt several times. A natural grace of serenity is lent by the lush green vegetation and rich flora, fauna around the temple. The architecture of temple is very good. The main hall has pillars covered up top to bottom with engraved flora and fauna, dancers and deities.

By Road: The temple is situated in sikar district of the Indian state of Rajasthan. Sikar is well connected to major cities by regular buses.

By Rail: The Temple is well connected through nearest sikar railway station (27 kms)
to major cities railway stations like Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, Chennai, Ajmer, Pali, Jaipur, Ahmedabad.

By Air:The Temple can be reached through nearest Jaipur Airport (101 Km) which is well connected with regular domestic flights to Delhi, Mumbai.

The temple opens at 4:00 AM and closes at 10:00 PM. Mata ji is given arathi at 4:00 AM, 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Archana, Abhishekam and Arathi are the daily rituals performed in the temple.

Millions of devotees assemble here for a colorful festival held twice in a year in the month of Chaitra and Ashvin during the Navratri. There are a number of dharamshalas to accommodate large number of visitors. Just close to this temple her brother Harsh Bhairav nath’s temple is situated on the top of the hill.
