Guptesvara Shiva Temple is located in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India. Bhubaneswar was known as Kapileswara in old times. It was built in the 14-15th century A.D. This temple is famous for its Linga. People pray to lord Shiva and offer Bili Patras on the divine and holy linga in the morning time.
In this temple, devotees worship to Lord Shiva as the ultimate incarnation and the creator. The linga is located in the centre of the temple in a circular shape. At present time, the local people of the village manage its beauty by forming a Kapilesvara Temple Trust Board.

Guptesvara Shiva Temple is very ancient. It is believed that it was constructed in the 14th century A.D. The stone used in building this marvelous Shiva temple is of Light Gray sandstone and the famous and popular Kalingan style architecture was applied to make it solid and strong.
The temple has a square sanctum measuring 1.70 metres, with a frontal porch of 0.95 metres. It is pancharatha as distinguished by a pair of anuratha and kanika pagas on either side of the raha. On elevation, the vimana is of pidha deul with usual bada, gandi and mastaka that measures 3.40 metres in height. With threefold division of bada, the temple has a trianga bada measuring 1.20 metres in height (Pabhaga 0.16 metres, jangha 0.86 metres, baranda 0.18 metres). The gandi and mastaka of the temple measures 1.40 metres and 0.80 metres in height respectively. The walls are plain. The doorjambs are plain and measure 1.17 metres in height x 0.51 metres in width. The Building material used here is Light grey sandstone. It was built with Dry masonry Construction techniques in Kalingan style. Over time, rain water seeped into the sanctum from all sides through cracks in the roof and walls. It was repaired by Orissa State Archaeology during X and XI Finance Commission Award and is now maintained by the Kapilesvara Trust Board.

Temple remains open from 6am to 9pm. During this period major rituals of Lord Shiva are performed. Mahashiva Ratri is celebrated at a grand scale in this temple. The months of September to November are perfect to visit this temple because, the climate is moderately cold, pleasant and perfect for enjoying the natural beauty. People, who want to enjoy the temple’s beauty and architecture calmly, should not visit the temple during the months of June or July.
As the temple is currently in a dilapidated state, there are no such major events held. However, pilgrims visit the temple during the event of Shiva ratri and Makar Sankranti.
Guptesvara Shiva Temple is very ancient and it is regarded that it is more than 2000 years old. The temple becomes crowded when Shivratri and Sankranti fall. The nearby villagers and the devotees gather here and celebrate for the whole day. There is a belief amongst the people that the temple was believed to the period of Gajapati.
