Karauli District is a district of Rajasthan state in western India. The town of Karauli is the district headquarters. Karauli is famous for popular red-stone.Karauli State was a princely state in India from 1348 to 1949. It is bordered by Dholpur District to the east; by Bharatpur District to the north-east; by Dausa District to the north; and by SawaiMadhopur District to the west.The Chambal River forms the south-eastern boundary of the district, 5 K.M. far from Mandrayal across which lies the state of Madhya Pradesh. While almost the entire district is covered by hills and ravines, there are no lofty peaks, the highest having an elevation of less than 1400 feet above sea-level.
Madan Mohan Ji Temple, Karauli, Rajasthan
Madan Mohan Ji Temple is a Hindu temple situated at Karauli, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The temple is located on the banks of the Bhadravati River, a tributary of the Banas River in the hills of Aravali.The principal deity is of Lord Krishna which was brought from Amer by Shri Gopal Singhji and installed here. The idol of Shri Krishna is 3 ft. high while that of Shri Radha is 2 ft. high and they are made of Asthadhatu. They are so antique that no one can think how precious they are. Both the idols are the unique example of sculpture and they seem to beloved like.
The Madan Mohan Ji Temple is dedicated to the tutelary deity, Lord Krishna. It is believed that Shri Gopal Singhji got victory in the battle of Daultabad. After this the king in his dream saw that Lord Krishna instructed him to fetch his idol from Amer and installed at Karauli. The king of Karauli therefore, brought this idol and got this temple constructed to enshrine it.
It is also said that to protect idols of Lord Krishna from Mughals, two idols were brought from Vrindavan and placed one at Karauliand another at Jaipur. It is said that to complete the Govardhan Yatra, it is mandatory to visit Madan Mohan Ji and Govind Dev Ji Temple.
It is one of the Char Dham of Karauli District. Other three are Kaila Devi Temple, MehandipurBalaji Temple and Shri Mahavirji.
Devotees used to put the Prasad. Jugal Prasad is a kind of Bhog in which devotees offer Laddu and Kachauri. It is put once in a day by one person only. The queue for the same is around two year long.
This Madan Mohan Ji Temple is situated in the lap of Karauli fort and is world renowned for its vastness and beauty. One can see temples in a series here. In front of the principal temple, there are many smaller shrines, especially in a moonlit night the beauty of the temple becomes indescribable.
The temple of Shri Madan Mohan ji is built of Karauli Stone and offers us the best example of medieval architecture. There is a circumambulatory path around the Garbhagriha. Here also beautiful pictures have been thrown. A wide open chowk beautiful and spacious Jagmohan and sanctum sanctorum are wonderful from architectural point of view.
The main materials used in the construction of this temple are Lime mortar and Karauli stone. It took almost three years for the architects to complete the construction of the temple.
A major part of the Lord Krishna rituals and observances are the mass prayers that are offered from morning 5:00 am to 10:00 pm.
This temple is a center of faith for the Hindu Community. The villagers in particular have strong devotion for the Lord here. Worship is performed in accordance with Gaudiya rituals and traditions.
All Hindus festivals are celebrated here, but those related to Radha and Krishna are celebrated with enthusiasm. They are Janmasthmi, RadhaAsthmi, Gopasthmi, and Hindola etc. On every Amavasya in a month, a fair is held which is attended by thousands of local and rural people.
Karauli is about 182km southeast of Jaipur and about 100km southwest of Mathura. It is a small town and is home to the important Madan Mohan Temple.
By Road:
Connected by road to several major cities and towns. RSRTC operates Roadways Buses very frequently for Jaipur and Delhi. Buses for Hindaun City Bus Stand, GangapurCityetc. are very frequent all over the day. RSRTC also operate some Gandhi Rath Buses (Semi Deluxe Bus) for Jaipur. Some of the major road distances are: Hindaun City (30 km),Jaipur (180 km), Bharatpur (90 km), Mathura (220 km), Agra (225 km), Delhi (280 km) and Gangapur city (34 km).
By Rail:
Hindaun City railway station is the nearest rail-head of the Western Railway and Gangapur&Mahaveerji are other railway stations for temple.
By Air:
Kaila Devi Temple can be reach through nearest Jaipur Airport (160 Km) which is well connected with regular domestic flights to Delhi, Mumbai.
Other places which are worth visiting in Karauli district:
- KedarNath Cave and Temple:This is the original temple of Kaila Devi. This place was declared unsafe due to threat from the animals in jungle of the Ranthambore. This is situated 3 km from the town. Devotees can walk there for the pray.
- RanthamboreSanctuary:Kaila devi is connected to one side of the century. which has an entrance from this town.
- Shri MahavirjiTemple:This is a Famous Jain Temple which is around 45 km from the town.
- MehandipurBalaji Temple: This is a temple of Lord Hanuman situated at a distance of around 95 km from the town.
- Barbasin Temple:This is a Barbasin Devi Temple which is situated at a distance of 13 km at the banks of Kalisil River.
