Sri Ardhagiri Veeranjaneya Swamy Temple has its origin attributed to one of the most important event at Ramayana. It’s the occasion at which Veeranjaneya Swamy carried the Sanjeevana Parvatha to the battle-place to save the life of Sri Lakshmana. This ancient temple is located on the luscious hills of the Aragonda village, Chitoor District. And it is at a 22 KM drive-away distance from the South India’s most famous Ganesha temple from Kanipakam.
The name Ardhagiri came from a myth related to Tretayuga, when Lord Hanuman was transporting Sanjeevani Mountain (mountain that consists of herbs for life), half of the mounatain fell down at this place and hence, the name Ardhagiri. In the local language, it means Half Mountain (Ardhra=half, giri=mountain).

As we mentioned earlier, the origin of this Sri Ardhagiri Veeranjaneya Swamy Temple is intricately connected to one of the most glorious Purana in Ramayana – the Lord Hanuman carries the Sanjeevani Parvatha to save his beloved swami’s brother – Lakshmana. It signifies the immense power and hefty devotion towards his Lord’s Rama. According to legends, while the Lord Veeranjaneya Swamy was carrying the Sanjeevani Parvatha, a part of the rock nearly broke-off and fell at the location of the temple. This place later came to be known by the name Aragonda. Today there exists a big tank, where the water has come into contact with the divine Sanjeevini Medicinal plant. Even after thousands of years, the water still holds the extraordinary power to cure almost all the diseases known to mankind. This water has proven its capacity to cure the extreme cases of acute diseases such as TB, asthma, cancer & joint pains. This water also has proven rejuvenating capacity against lethargy, fatigue and other physical discomfort.
This famous temple that attracts devotees from far and wide has a legend. Ramayana is one of the famous epics of India. It is believed that Sita, wife of Lord Rama was abducted by the mighty Ravana, the Demon King, and kept as a prisoner at Lanka (now Srilanka), the island kingdom of Ravana. Rama with the help of monkeys, waged a war and killed Ravana to get back Sita. During the battle Lakshmana, younger brother of Rama was battling with Ravana. He became unconscious when one of the arrows of Ravana hit him. So the Physician wanted a herb known as “Sanjeevani” to resurrect Lakshmana
This herb was available in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas which were far away from the Lanka. Hanuman or the monkey God, who could fly long distances in no time and who had immense strength and intelligence was deputed to bring the herb, but before sunrise. Hanuman went to the Himalayas in no time. But he could not differentiate between the various herbs and plants available. So He just plucked the entire mountain and carried back to the place where Lakshmana was lying unconscious.
During this journey, it is believed that a piece of rock from the mountain fell into the tank. Since a piece of mountain fell here it got its name of Ardhagiri or Arakonda. The striking feature of the moolavigraha (Main deity) is that it faces towards north, which is a rarity. The first says of the sun; fall on the feet of the Lord. Gradually the sunrays disappear after reaching the head of the lord. It is also believed that the ardent devotees and staunch believers can even hear the ‘Omkara Nada’ (Chanting of Om) at midnight amidst silence. It is deemed that Lord Anjaneya stays to safeguard Lord Lakshmi Narayana as he dwells there.
Ardhagiri (a famous Lord Anjaneya Swamy Temple) is near the village. Also, has temples viz., Shiva Temple, Sri Rama Temple, Chinna Gudi (Vinayaka Swamy, Subramanya Swamy, Ayyappa Swamy, Nava grahamulu, nelli chettu, naga devatha), satyamma, nagula raallu, church, masjid and more.
The Main deity takes a north-facing posture. While this not a typical direction the lord assumes at a temple, this direction is pointing towards the field of battle. According to legends, this is the direction Sri Veeranjaneya assumed while flying back to the battlefield carrying the Sanjeevani the medicine. It’s also believed that the temple direction allows the sun gods to play homage to the bravery and devotion of Sri Veeranjaneya Swamy. The special temple architecture allows the oblong rays of the sun to pass through the structure and fall only on the feet of the Lord Anjaneya. As the day progresses the sun rays strike each and every portion of the head, but finally disappearing beyond the head region. The water in the temple tank at Aragonda is called Sanjeevaraya Pushkarini Tank. It’s believed that this water has the divine Sanjeevani elements infused into the pond water. This is considered as one of the most important Veeranjaneya Swamy Temple in south India. Each day the visitor count almost goes above five thousand, each of them completely devotional immersed in the experience.
